AberMUN 2011!

1 March, 2011 at 6:08 pm | Posted in Uncategorized | Leave a comment

Dear Honourable Delegates,

Aberystwyth Model UN Society is proud to announce that we will be hosting our third annual weekend conference from the 2nd -4th of December 2011 at Aberystwyth University’s renowned Department of International Politics.

We hereby extend our warmest invitations to any and all students
interested in joining us for three days of intense debate, meeting new
people and exciting social events.

With two successful conferences at our backs, we are aiming to build upon
the foundations we have made to create a bigger, better, more fulfilling
experience for all delegates. Our members bring a wealth of MUN and
organisational experience to the table, along with plenty of energy and
strong motivation making our team confident of hosting another thriving
conference.

Last year, we focused on problematic issues with the United Nations
itself. The Security Council struggled with the problem of Security
Council Membership, and surprisingly managed to accomplish what many
thought to be impossible: a fair and equitable resolution. SpecPol also
succeeded in making excellent advances in the treatment of refugees and
stateless peoples, even though they had some trouble in the form of the
Soviet Politburo. The Politburo was our special committee, and the sheer
amount of drama that occurred in their room was so much that it spilled
out and they ended up commandeering the chamber of SpecPol – even
conducting a brief session in Russian! All in all, last year was three
days of pure excitement.

The International Politics Department here at Aberystwyth is the ideal
institution to host a Model UN conference, as it is the oldest department
of its kind in the world. Founded in 1919 by Major David Davies in the
hopes of discovering what drove states to war so incessantly, the
Aberystwyth ‘InterPol’ department now houses some of the greatest thinkers
and academics in the field of International Politics. The AberMUN Society hopes to draw on the expertise and experience of these scholars, as well as the department’s PhD candidates, in creating an inspiring setting for our discussions. Considering this, it’s safe to say that all delegates
should be quite excited by the guest speakers for the ceremonies.

With the InterPol Department providing the academic backbone of the conference and its contents, AberMUN 2011 promises to be both educational and engaging.

Registration will open near the beginning of term next academic year, so
please stay tuned as more detailed announcements will follow. Meanwhile
you can contact us anytime at scty34[at]aber.ac.uk for any questions or
comments.

All the best and we hope to see as many of you as possible at AberMUN
2011. I truly believe that it will be fantastic.

Dear Delegates,

We thank you all for making the third annual Aberystwyth Model United Nations conference a success. Whether it was in the Security Council, the General Assembly or the Soviet Politburo you all showed remarkable skill as diplomats and negotiators representing your nations. The Secretariat expresses their hope that you all have some interesting and fun memories of AberMUN. To refresh those memories that may have fallen victim to the intense social events programme, pictures and the movie made by our exceptionally dedicated film team will be available after the winter holidays.

We hope to see as many as possible of you at next year’s AberMUN which promises to be even better than the 2010 version! So bring your friends.

Happy holidays and an awesome New Year!

Greetings to everyone who has joined Aberystwyth Model United Nations this year! We were very impressed by the massive turnout on Monday, and hope that everyone will come back every week. Our meetings take place every Monday from 6:15-8:15 PM. Due to the sheer mass of you, we will be in two different rooms: the Library Seminar Room on Floor F of the library, and D54, a small lecture theatre on the same floor as the Library’s front doors. The next few weeks will be a gentle introduction to the world of Model United Nations, and we will be introducing a few more of the rules every week, to make sure everyone understands how we operate.

We are all looking forward to seeing excellent debates over the next months, as even the first meeting saw an excellent quality of debate all round!

Hope to see you every Monday!

2010/2011 – Here we come!

22 June, 2010 at 5:17 pm | Posted in Uncategorized | Leave a comment

The sun is rising over a transforming world. International conflict, economic crises, climate change and shortages of energy, water and food threaten the very foundations of human existence. But have no fear – a new AberMUN committee is elected!

Over the next year we will be working hard to keep the spirit of the United Nations alive on our campus – through weekly Model UN meetings, trips to conferences around the UK and Europe and of course through our own conference, here in Aberystwyth:

Join our weekly meetings and step into the shoes of a diplomat! You can find us Tuesdays at 8pm in the Library Seminar room, where we will be debating various topics in a UN setting.

Represent Aberystwyth University at Model UN conferences across Europe and the World! We will begin forming delegations in October for various conferences in 2010 and 2011.

Take part in AberMUN 2010. In December the International Politics Department will set the stage for the second annual Aberystwyth Model United Nations conference. With around 80 delegates from Universities across the UK and the European continent…

So whether you are completely new to the exciting world of Model United Nations or an old fox looking for new challenges – Aberystwyth MUN Society is the place to be!

Hi all,

Our next session on Monday the 4th will be a Security Council session on the current situation of political and ethnic violence in Kenya. As this is a crisis which is unfolding, you should refer to news sources for research (I suggest BBC News), and know the latest development on the issue Monday, as we will be doing this in “real-time”.

Hopefully we can get as many people as last time – feel free to pick a country in the comment section below if you wish.
