About the society

AberMUN flag Aberystwyth Model United Nations (MUN) Society was founded in September 2002, as the United Nations Association of Aberystwyth. However, since then, the society has changed into a Model UN Society.

The Aberystwyth MUN is a society that operates under the United Nation’s rules of procedure and tasks members with debating and negotiating in character as the delegation for a country where they try to represent their countries opinion on the topic under discussion; the aim of each debate being to pass a UN resolution on the topic. Our regular meetings are on Mondays at 6:15pm in the Seminar Room, Hugh Owen Library, Level F. Some of the Topics that we have discussed include:

  • Child Soldiers
  • Climate Change
  • Piracy off the coast of Somalia
  • International Terrorism
  • Modern Day Slavery
  • Freedom of the Press

Aber MUN Society also represents Aberystwyth University at Model United Nations conferences throughout the UK and Europe by attending such conferences as WorldMUN, LIMUN and the Cambridge MUN.

Have a look at the conferences we have attended.

In December 2008, 2009 and 2010 we were proud to host our own 3-day MUN conference, AberMUN, in the Department of International Politics of Aberystwyth University. Information on the 2011 AberMUN Conference will be available soon.

If you would like to know more about our society, feel free to have a look at the society committee, a list of our past sessions (including resolutions), or send an email to abermun [at] googlemail [dot] com.
